Great Smoky Mountain National Park

Smoky Mountains

We are so blessed to live so close to the Smokies!  We've actually only really started hiking here in the last couple of years and except for the crowded trails, we have really enjoyed it!

Chimney Top Trail

This trial is rated as difficult and I would agree!  So much of trail ratings are subjective and for me, a lot of it depends on the day and the conditions.  This was a hot day and I had had very little sleep the night before and I struggled with this one.  There are a lot of stairs!  I wish you could still hike out to Chimney Top, but the last part of the trail is closed due to wildfire damage from 2016.  You can still get a great view where it ends.

Ramsey Cascades

This is another challenging hike at around 8 miles roundtrip.  The first half is pretty easy, but the second half has a lot of elevation gain and stairs.  In my opinion, these are probably the most impressive falls in the Smokies (at least of the ones we've seen).  There are lots of great rocks to sit and eat lunch and you can walk right up to the base of the falls. The park has worked to improve the trail over the years and is easier to navigate now than it used to be.  They are also continuing work and during 2024, the trial is closed Mon- Thurs for maintenance and improvement.
